Smith scores 16 as Lady Aces rout Flora

Mount Carmel junior Maya Smith scored 16 points in their 54-23 rout of Flora on Monday night.

FLORA -- It was all Mount Carmel in Monday's contest at Flora.

Looking to continue their momentum from the Robinson Tournament, the Lady Aces set the bar early with a blistering, up-tempo, high pressure pace and wreaked havoc on Flora en route to their 54-23 demolition of the Wolfgals on Monday night in Flora.

Mount Carmel Head Girls Basketball Coach Tim Willis' newly implemented track meet style of play thrived, as his Lady Aces (5-2) were completely disruptive with their full-court press and created transition opportunities early and often.

Their lead reached as high as 35-3 midway through the second quarter until Willis called off the press, as Mount Carmel did just about anything they wanted.

That up-tempo, blistering pace forced 22 Wolfgal (0-6) turnovers in the one sided first half. Lady Ace juniors Maya Smith and Rylie Webb scored 11 points a piece in the half to lead the charge.

Albeit Mount Carmel called off the horses in the second half, the damage was already substantial and the Lady Aces cruised the remainder of the way to the victory.

Willis, who called for the his team to up the defensive intensity recently, was pleased with his team's effort on the defensive end of the floor against Flora. Though there's certainly still areas to tweak out, it was quite a welcoming development for the team, especially on the heels of a second place showing at the Robinson Tournament.

“Our defensive pressure was better tonight, especially in our pressing game,” Mount Carmel Head Coach Tim Willis said. “We still need to improve on rebounding positioning but overall very good effort by all of [our girls tonight].”

Smith was the Lady Aces' leading scorer, with 16 points. Webb accompanied Smith in double-figures with 11 points, while junior Haley Wright also chipped in nine points.

Mount Carmel (5-2) has now won five of their last six contests, with their average margin of victory in the five wins sitting at 24 points per game.

Now, with an abundance of confidence going forward, the Lady Aces will finish their week with a road contest against against Weber (0-2) on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m., followed by a home game against Murphysboro (1-2) at 3:30 p.m.
