Team 8-2 this summer, ranked No. 23 in nation
MOUNT CARMEL — While sports have taken a back seat with the COVID-19 pandemic, Wabash Mission Softball is enjoying some incredible success on the Indiana side of the river.
One group in particular, the Wabash Mission 10U group, is thriving this summer.
Wabash Mission 09 — which competes in the 10U C Division in USSSA — has posted an 8-2 record this summer and rank No. 23 in the nation according to USSSA.
They’re one of just two Illinois squads on the list, the other being the Z20 Bombers 09 based in Nashville, Ill., who rank No. 7 in the top 25.
Thus far they’ve finished second in three tournaments this summer, the 12th Annual Santa Claus Classic, the Tri-State Championship in Rockport (was a B-class tournament), and the Tri-State C Class Championship in late-June.
Mission 09 advanced to the championship in each of the three tournaments, but lost 10-6 to the Indiana Firestix in the Santa Claus Classic, and received second place by default in the latter two tournaments due to lightning cancellations.
They’ll get their chance to prove themselves on one of the top stages, the USSSA Great Lakes Nationals at Deaconess Park in Evansville from July 14-19.
The tournament features 18 teams and guarantees five games for the group.
All the Mission Softball teams will be participating in this tournament, one which the program enjoyed some success in last year.
While it typically features a number of festivities such as a parade, costume competitions, etc., it could potentially be significantly scaled back this year due to COVID-19.
If not, the USSSA Pride, a professional softball team from Florida, will also be in attendance and playing on June 16-17.
For those itching for some sports, this could be a great opportunity to cheer on the hometown girls and witness a weeklong showcase of softball.
