Drone nets 14; Lady Aces edge Lady Bulldogs for first victory

Mount Carmel senior Kassidy Drone scored a team-high 14 points in her Lady Aces' 38-33 victory over Carmi on Thursday night.

CARMI -- Mount Carmel senior Kassidy Drone scored 14 points to guide the Lady Aces to their first win of the season, as they defeated Carmi 38-33 on Thursday night in Carmi.

After a Jayley Akers scoring outburst narrowly edged the Lady Aces in their home opener, they were seeking an opportunity to get back on track and find themselves back into the winning column.

It wouldn't be easy, however. Carmi's (1-2) a quality team, who won their opener 49-47 over North Posey (Ind.) and would give the Lady Aces (1-1) all they could handle.

Both teams stayed on a steady pace throughout the game, remaining tied 16-16 at halftime.

Mount Carmel would gain the slimmest of leads at the end of the third quarter, maintaining a 25-24 lead at the conclusion of the quarter.

They'd put the finishing touches on it in the fourth quarter, with Drone and junior Maya Smith guiding the way toward victory.

Drone scored four of her 14 in the fourth, while Smith scored seven of her 11 points in the quarter to give the Lady Aces the necessary push to outscore Carmi 13-9 in the quarter and hold on for their first victory of the season.

The tandem of Drone's 14 and Smith's 11 points were the lone two Lady Aces in double-figures scoring, though they'd get valuable contributions from junior Rylie Webb (five points), senior Alli Kell (four points), as well as juniors Haley Wright and Allie McPherson (two points apiece).

Carmi was led by Sydney Lucas, who posted a game-high 17 points in a valiant effort by the Lady Bulldog. 11 of Lucas' 17 came in the second half, as she tried to keep Carmi at pace with Mount Carmel.

With the victory Mount Carmel advances to 1-1 on the season, with the newly added Robinson Tournament on the horizon.

The Robinson Tournament will begin on Friday for Mount Carmel, when the Lady Aces travel to face Fairfield (2-0) in Robinson at noon. They'll have a short turnaround, as they'll play the hosts, Robinson (1-2) shortly after, with a 6:30 p.m. tip-off slated for Friday night.
