MOUNT CARMEL — Just days after receiving the go ahead from the Diocese of Belleville and the SIJHSAA, it appears St. Mary’s and Allendale’s fall co-op sporting season will not take place.

The schools received notice from the Diocese on Friday afternoon of the indefinite postponement of all sports.

According to the release, the Diocese will continue to evaluate the safety of sports through the course of the year, and may reverse course if sports are deemed safety and don’t jeopardize a return to the classroom.

“With this information, the cooperative athletic teams for Allendale CCSD 17 and St. Mary’s School will not be participating in any Fall sports,” Allendale Superintendent Bob Bowser said. “As the Diocese of Belleville has stated, we too as a cooperative athletic program will continue to revisit this issue throughout the school year, along with the SIJHSAA. Both schools appreciate the support we receive from each school community and look forward to the day we can compete again, together, in athletics.”

The sports affected by this announcement (at this time) include baseball, softball and cross country.
