MOUNT CARMEL — The Golden Aces golf team turned in a quality victory during its Mount Carmel Invitational on Thursday at Mount Carmel Municipal Golf Course.

The Golden Aces won the tournament by 20 strokes (309 to 329) over 2016 IHSA Class 1A Sectional Tournament champion Hamilton County.

“That was a good win,” MCHS boys golf head coach John White said. “I knew we were going to have a good team. (A score of) 309 will get you to state. The first of October, we’ve got to be shooting the same score as we are right now. But, I am really happy with our performance today.”

Last fall, the Foxes captured the sectional title with a 327, while the Golden Aces finished fourth with a 332 at Robinson. Teutopolis (328) and Hillsboro (329) placed second and third, respectively, within a crowd at the top.

The top three sectional teams qualify for the state tournament.

Mount Carmel occupied three of the top six spots in the individual standings. Dawson Brown was the medalist after shooting a 1-over 72, while Blake Golden was the runner-up with a 74 and Brayden Peterson came in sixth with an 80.

“It's important to have a couple guys battling each other at the top of the lineup,” White said of Brown and Golden. “That's what we had with our state-winning team. We had three and four guys battling (for the best score), and we never knew who was going to win.”

Golden could have subtracted three shots from his score Thursday with better luck.

“I had to take a lost ball on No. 11, which turned into a triple bogey, but I was able to finish with an eagle on the last hole to make up for it,” Golden said. “Overall, I felt like I left some shots out there, but I was able to grind it out and post a respectable score.”

Golden finished 13th and Brown claimed 53rd in the Class 1A state tournament last fall.

Austyn Downen led Hamilton County with a 76 ahead of fourth-place finisher Ty Barbre of Carmi-White County (78) and fifth-place finisher Maverick Conrad of Fairfield (78).

Conrad and the Mules are coached by former Mount Carmel standout golfer Andrew Williams.

Scorecard playoffs were used to break ties.

Mount Carmel plays a dual match at Robinson at 1 p.m. Monday.
