Fantastic support for Rotary Corn Day
For the first time in the 56-year history of Rotary Corn Day, the annual fundraising event was held as a drive-through at the Mabel Courter Youth Center because of the COVID 19 pandemic.
As Rotarians began planning the event in early spring, it became evident there were going to be a lot of details and unknowns that Rotarians had never faced before. But plans were made, the date set, and Rotary Corn Day 2020 became a drive thru on July 5. It was a very hot day, we ran short of corn, but the support and patience of the community was fantastic and we are pleased to report that the 2020 Rotary Corn Day was a success. We served a little short of our usual 1,500 people.
An event of this magnitude could not be successful and long-lasting without the help of numerous people in Wabash County and the surrounding communities. The Rotary Club of Mt. Carmel wishes to recognize and to thank the following individuals, organizations, and businesses for their continued help and support of Corn Day: Rotary spouses, families, and friends for their time and extraordinary efforts all week and all day on Sunday; the numerous community volunteers who donated their time and worked really hard for the success of Corn Day; the Mt. Carmel Lions Club and the Boy Scouts Troop 293 who helped shuck more than 500 dozen ears of corn early Sunday morning; the Wabash Emergency Management Agency volunteers who not only helped shuck corn, but were on hand all day directing traffic in the hot sun and stayed to help clean up; WSJD Radio, The Register, the Albion Navigator, and WVC TV for promoting Corn Day through their media; Rural King of Mt. Carmel for supplying the wonderful large plastic bags; the city of Mt. Carmel workers who helped get the cookers and tubs out of the shed before Corn Day; Allendale FS for the LP gas, the MCHS Interact Club; K Blooms for the large cooler; Becky Majors for making Rotary masks for the event; Johnny Smith for the gas line repair; and Pastor Tony Hodgson and the Heartland Worship Center for the use of their truck to pick up the corn on Saturday morning.
A special thank you goes to Dave Klosterman and the Wabash County Youth Foundation for the outstanding cooperation and support for the success of Rotary Corn Day each year.
Finally, we thank the many individuals who bought tickets and attended the 2020 Rotary Corn Day drive thru. The Mt. Carmel Rotary Club truly appreciates your continued support of this event each year — even when we have to make drastic changes from the usual format. All proceeds from Corn Day are used to benefit community projects and worldwide humanitarian efforts as we strive to fulfill Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self.
Mt. Carmel Rotary Club,
Jeff Perry, 2019-20 president
