MOUNT CARMEL — The Tuesday, Sept. 15 edition of your newspaper enters a new chapter in Southeastern Illinois journalism.

Parent company Paxton Media Group’s recent acquisition of newspapers in Carmi, Flora, Olney, Newton and Teutopolis gives us an opportunity to provide wider hometown news coverage in our area, and beginning Tuesday, readers will see stories from all of these communities within the expanded page count of the newly named twice-weekly Hometown Register.

“The Register is the oldest continuously operating newspaper flag in this region, closing in on her 180th year in June 2021. We are preserving her name in the flag, and extending our commitment to hometown news with front page stories from each county, an expanded page count with community happenings from all the towns, and of course, a full sports report — plus features, local faith and worship news and columns, and local opinion pages,” said Publisher Courtney Shuttle.

“My community journalism career is rooted in Southeastern Illinois,” said Editor Andrea Howe, a veteran reporter/editor with nearly 40 years in local news. “Paxton Media Group is a family-owned news organization, and my own family and friends in many of these communities is even more incentive for me to help preserve the tradition of good hometown news for readers.”

The newspaper will be mailed to all subscribers on Tuesdays and Fridays. Continue to send news items to your normal contacts, Regional Editor Chip Barche or staff writers Corey Woolsey and Robert Beskow in your communities, or email to ahowe@mtcarmelregister.com or andrea@pdclarion.com

In addition to the print edition, an e-edition is available by subscription, and top stories of the region will also be featured online at www.mtcarmelregister.com.
