Volunteers exchange a produce box to deliver to a vehicle at Saturday’s Mobile Market at the Mount Carmel Church of Christ.

MOUNT CARMEL — A host of volunteers from the United Way of South Central Illinois brought a Mobile Market event to Mount Carmel on Saturday morning.

The event, hosted at the Mount Carmel Church of Christ on North Cherry Street, offered free produce for those who are struggling to provide during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Enclosed inside each Cusumano and Sons produce box was five apples, three onions, five potatoes, three squash and a pineapple.

United Way brought a box truck full of these produce boxes, with volunteers stationed and ready to hand them out to those who stopped by for the event.

To ensure their own safety and the citizens of Mount Carmel, exchanges of the produce boxes were contactless and volunteers were wearing protective masks and gloves.

Once a car pulled up, the driver was instructed to pop the trunk of their vehicle, at which time a volunteer would place the produce box inside the vehicle.

To date United Way has made stops in Mount Vernon, McLeansboro, and made stops in Salem and Mount Carmel on Saturday.

United Way intends to provide this service to as many cities in South-Central Illinois that allow them to do so.
