MOUNT CARMEL -- Having completed a variety of renovations to their main facility, West Berwick Golf Course in Mount Carmel hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to launch the new look golf course to the public on Friday afternoon with a good turnout on hand to witness the ceremony.

To begin the ceremony, Doug McPherson, Chairman of the board for West Berwick management, as well as city commissioner and West Berwick Captain Eric Ikemire, offered some words to express their vision for the golf course, as well as their gratitude to the city and the community.

"This is a historic day really," McPherson commented. "This is something we're all really excited about and I'm pleased to have everybody here to enjoy it with us. . . . Ultimately I'd like to say as far as the West Berwick Golf Club members go, the way we see it is, it's a huge for the "three C's." It's a huge win for the city, it's a huge win for the club, but most importantly it's a huge win for the community."

Ikemire followed McPherson's comments by explaining that West Berwick will continue to hold the club's initial goal in utmost priority -- to support junior golf. In recognition of that, Ikemire presented a donation to the Mount Carmel High School golf teams, who were in attendance along with their coaches, Karin Kelsey and John White.

"The mission of West Berwick Golf Club when it was established was to support junior golf," Ikemire spoke of club's mission. "That'll continue through the golf course and be a top priority for us."

McPherson explained that the club's aiming to give guests a "country club feel" while maintaining its access as a public course. He added that he feels they're on track to reaching their goal six months into their facelift and thanked all of those who've helped make their vision one step closer to reality.

Club members, the golf teams, and many of those in attendance all gathered behind Ikemire and McPherson for the ceremonial ribbon cutting after their speeches, prior to unveiling and offering guests to stay to catch a glimpse of some of the new amenities.

Headlining their renovations is the Stymies at West Berwick Restaurant. Stymies is a newly opened restaurant in the club house portion of the course open. The club's mission is to attract golfers and Mount Carmel citizens alike to the restaurant, offering tasty menu options along with a bar inside the facility -- an option for golfers after a long day on the greens or families seeking a family lunch or dinner.
