Santos earns MCPD lifesaver commendation

Andrea Howe/The Register Robin Crouch and her husband Roger hug MCPD Patrolman Gilbert Santos after Santos received a commendation at Monday's Mount Carmel City Council meeting for life-saving efforts.

MOUNT CARMEL — Mount Carmel Police Department Patrolman Gilbert Santos is a lifesaver.

"Words aren't enough," Roger Crouch told the police officer Monday night when MCPD Chief Ryan Turner presented Santos with a commendation for his efforts in saving the life of Crouch's wife Robin on June 13.

Turner made the presentation to Santos at Monday evening's Mount Carmel City Council meeting, garnering a standing ovation from those present. Crouch and his wife embraced Santos, publicly thanking him for his actions.

Chief Turner explained the commendation stems from a 911 call at 1:18 a.m. Thursday, June 13, to the Crouch home West Third Street.

MCPD, Wabash General Hospital and the Mount Carmel Fire Department responded to the call, with Santos arriving to find Crouch unresponsive, lying in her bed. He moved her to the floor and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation until she was revived. Emergency medical service arrived and Crouch was transferred by ambulance for further medical treatment.

Turner said Santos' CPR efforts played a role in saving Crouch's life. "Otherwise, it could have led to a tragic outcome," he said, expressing MCPD's appreciation for his actions.
