The Mount Carmel City Council approved a $12,000 purchase of the 2.5-acre plot adjacent to the Shopko property at last week’s city council meeting. City officials are hopeful the property helps entice businesses to come to Mount Carmel.

MOUNT CARMEL — What business would you like to see come to Mount Carmel?

A new store? A new restaurant? Well, with the city council’s new purchase, there’s potential for some new businesses to inquire into Mount Carmel.

At last Monday’s City Council meeting the council approved for the purchase of a 2.5 acre plot of land adjacent to the old Shopko building on West 9th Street in Mount Carmel.

City Administrator Rudy Witsman priced the purchase at $12,000, and all city commissioners — including Mount Carmel Mayor Joe Judge — seemed heavily in favor of the purchase.

City officials hope the purchase will help entice prospective businesses to come to Mount Carmel, a city which has seen a number of local businesses close in the past several years.

As part of the purchase, Judge said the city plans to change the pattern of a nearby creek, which flows into Greathouse Creek. Judge said the adjustment would help connect land on the other side, which is part of the plot as well.

It’s unclear when construction will begin on the property.
