MOUNT CARMEL — A candlelight vigil is planned at 8 p.m. tonight (Friday) at Veterans Park in Mount Carmel, according to a news release submitted by Rena Bever Friday morning.

The event is planned "in concurrence and solidarity with the hundreds of other 'Lights For Liberty' protests taking place in cities across the country, which seek to draw attention to the inhumane conditions in the detention enters along our southern border, including the lack of basic nutrition and hygiene," the release explains. "In Mount Carmel, the aim of those participating is to demonstrate our determination to maintain a compassionate outlook on the situation, in keeping with our values, rather than closing our hearts to the children and families affected by this crisis," it states.

The vigil, expected to last about 30 minutes, is open to anyone to participate and is not affiliated with any political party.
