MT. CARMEL — East Richland defeated Mt. Carmel 43-40 to win the SIJHSAA Class L Girls Basketball Regional Tournament championship Monday at Mt. Carmel Middle School.

The Lady Cubs made a 12-7 fourth-quarter run to seal their victory. Brittany Black came off the East Richland bench to score seven of her nine points in the final period.

The Lady Junior Aces, who led 33-31 after three quarters, received a game-high 16 points from Sela Lashbrook, who fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Kassidy Drone and Mattia Potter each added six points for Mt. Carmel.

East Richland, which benefitted from 11 points from 11 Taylor LeCrone and nine more from Cameron Haugh, advanced to the SIJHSAA Class L Girls Basketball State Tournament, where it plays Highland in a quarterfinal game at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at Rend Lake College.

MCMS wins Junior NEC Tournament

CARMI — The Mt. Carmel seventh grade girls basketball team won the Junior North Egypt Conference Tournament title Saturday.

The Junior Lady Aces, who were the Junior NEC regular season champions, completed an undefeated season.

MCMS topped East Richland 36-29 in the league tournament title contest after posting a 42-27 victory against Carmi-White County in the semifinal round, also Saturday.

Six different Junior Lady Aces scored — Kassidy Drone (three points), Tabby Cross (two), Madi Merritt (two), Jessica Wall (two), Mariah VanMatre (one) and Alyssa Stoneberger (one) — as Mt. Carmel made an 11-6 fourth-quarter run to seal its championship win over East Richland.

Drone had 11 points to lead MCMS, which received 10 more from Merritt and seven from Stoneberger.

The Junior Lady Aces trailed 9-4 after one quarter before constructing a 14-6 second-quarter run to grab an 18-15 lead. The Lady Cubs won the third quarter 8-7 to make it a 35-33 margin.

Drone (16) and VanMatre (13) combined for 29 points to lift Mt. Carmel past Carmi-White County.

Owensville tops MCMS in third

MT. CARMEL — An 11-2 third-quarter run helped Owensville defeat the Mt. Carmel eighth grade basketball team 56-47 on Tuesday.

Owensville, which led 32-30 at halftime, built a 43-32 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Dawson Witte recorded 29 points to lead Owensville.

Bret Doan paced the Junior Aces with 27 points, while Austin Rager added 12 more.

MT. CARMEL — The Mt. Carmel seventh grade boys basketball team won the final three quarters of a 30-16 victory against Owensville on Tuesday.

The Junior Aces trailed 7-5 after one quarter until MCMS went on a 25-9 run. Mt. Carmel led 16-9 at haltime after winning the second quarter 11-2.

Elijah Laws had nine points to top the Junior Aces while Elliott Laws added eight more.

Red Hill comeback stuns Junior Aces

SUMNER — Red Hill needed a fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Mt. Carmel sixth grade boys basketball ‘A’ team 31-27 in overtime Tuesday.

The Junior Aces led 20-9 after three quarters before the Salukis scored 16 of the next 21 points to force a 25-all tie at the end of regulation time. Red Hill held a 6-2 edge in overtime to seal its victory.

Noah Martin led MCMS with nine points.

Second-half rally propels MCMS win

SUMNER — The Mt. Carmel sixth grade boys basketball ‘B’ team scored the final 13 points of a 22-11 victory versus Red Hill on Tuesday.

The Salukis were ahead 11-9 at halftime until the Junior Aces responded with seven points in the third quarter and six more in the fourth quarter.

Luke Laws had eight points to pace MCMS.

The Junior Aces trailed 27-8 after three quarters until scoring eight of the final 14 points.

Brant Salhani led MCMS with 10 points, six of which came in the fourth quarter.
