MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. -- Three Aces tallied double digits in points in the Mount Carmel Junior High's eighth grade 56-38 victory over Carmi-White on Tuesday night at Mount Carmel Grade School. The seventh grade squad was also victorious, defeating Carmi 36-25.
In the seventh grade game, the Aces led the whole way, boasting a 20-9 halftime lead en route to their victory. The Junior Aces were led in scoring by Blayne Sisson's 10 points. Also chipping in for Mount Carmel, Aiden Garwood with nine points, Andrew Gillihan scoring eight points, Jesse Hinderliter with eight points and Levi Beesley with a point.
The latter game of the night saw another dominant Mount Carmel performance, this time by the eighth grade team.
Their press and up-tempo pace bothered Carmi, as their blistering pace opened transition opportunities off deflections and steals. Gage Kennard scored six of his 10 points in the first quarter, giving them a 14-9 lead at the end of the quarter. The Aces had led 14-6, but Carmi hit a remarkable half-court shot as time expired in the quarter.
They continued their play in the second quarter despite eight first half fouls with over five minutes remaining in the second quarter. They took complete control in the third and fourth quarters, putting the game out of reach and extending their lead as high as 22.
Leading the charge in scoring was Gavin Smith with a game-high 17 points, followed by Kennard and Cole Broster each with 10 points. Owen Dougherty added six, Ethan Wilson, Shain Weir and Andrew Gillihan each scored three points, Garrett Hodge added two and Blayne Sisson and Donald Downing each scored a point.
Following another successful outing, the Junior Aces are set to host the Mount Carmel Middle School Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 1 for the seventh graders. The game is slotted to start at 6 p.m. on Saturday. After the tournament they'll have a six-game road stretch before returning home on Jan. 10 against Flora at 6 p.m..
