EFFINGHAM -- Teutopolis continues to be a thorn in the side of the Mount Carmel Lady Aces after the Wooden Shoes' 60-39 victory Monday night in a Class 2A Sectional semifinal contest in girls high school basketball action.
The win for Teutopolis marks the fifth straight time Mount Carmel has been eliminated by the Shoes.
"We didn't play very well in the first half," said Mount Carmel coach Tim Willis, whose Lady Aces trailed 30-6 at the break. "T-Town took us out of it. Give them credit. They're a better team than we are. We knew we were going to have to play a near-perfect game in order to get to where we want in the fourth quarter and take our chances. They came out and shot the ball really well and we didn't."

The Class 2A, sixth-ranked Shoes never trailed after starting the game on an 8-0 run then opened up an 18-2 lead midway through the second quarter en route to a 60-39 victory to end the Lady Aces' basketball season.
"We got ourselves in a bind having two points for most of that first half," said Willis. "We did some good things in the first half, we just didn't shoot the ball very well. We obviously had too many turnovers but T-town is obviously a very good team and they showed us (why) tonight."
After scoring just six points in the first half which featured a 1-for-13 performance from the field and a 4-for-4 showing at the free throw line, the Lady Aces trailed 30-6 after 16 minutes of action.
At the end of the game, Mount Carmel went on to shoot 11-for-32 from the field. Teutopolis was 12-for-30 in the first half alone and 25-for-51 for the game.
"We challenged them at halftime to see what kind of person they are, individually and what kind of team (they) are and they showed it there that second half," said Willis. "We just got into too big of a hole to get out of it. Twenty-four points down at halftime, you're not coming back to beat a team the caliber of T-town."
The third quarter was more balanced as the Shoes won the quarter, 15-14. Kassidy Drone knocked down a 3 and Kylie Applebey hit two free throws for a 5-0 run for the Lady Aces late in third quarter. Mount Carmel's Baylie Ray knocked down a 3 with 10 seconds left as the Lady Aces trailed, 45-20, at the end of three quarters.
"They did the things they needed to do, but I thought our kids came back and battled well," said Willis. "That's the kind of stuff you have to do to be successful in life. It says a lot about their character as individuals and the character of the entire team."
Applebey scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter. Maya Smith, Kami Kline and Ray each finished with seven points, respectively.
"Maya has just gotten better throughout the year and Kami, she's been a gem for us all year long. They all have their roles and they've done it really well.
"I'm really pleased with the season. It's not the way we want to end it. I thought we came out and competed well in the second half."
The Wooden Shoes featured a balanced scoring line up with three players reaching double figures. Jolene Bueker led the way with 14 points. Marianna Hemmen finished with 12 points and Sadie Bueker tallied 11.
Mount Carmel's season ends at 18-12 while Teutopolis -- ranked sixth in Class 2A -- will face Sullivan, who defeated Marshall Monday night, in Thursday's sectional championship game.
