MOUNT CARMEL — ON1 Aces, a faith-based character building series of motivational speakers for young athletes, is scheduled to kickoff its 2017 season Wednesday at the Junior Golden Aces football practice field on Golden Aces Way.
This is the third season for ON1 Aces, which has the motto, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
Former Oklahoma Sooners and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Brian Bosworth spoke to the group last season.
Local churches and volunteers provide meals for Junior Golden Aces players and coaches. This free event is open to the public.
The name of the first speaker in 2017 will be revealed Monday.
Buss helps Hoosiers go 3-0 on Italian tour
VENETO, Italy — Mount Carmel native Tyra Buss led Indiana to an 83-51 win over the Veneto Stars on Wednesday in the final game of the Hoosiers' three-game tour of Italy.
Buss produced a team-high 17 points to go along with four steals and three assists for Indiana, which went 3-0 on its foreign trip.
Four more Hoosiers scored in double figures, including Amanda Cahill (12 points, nine rebounds), Bendu Yeaney (10 points, nine rebounds), Jaelynn Penn (10 points, six rebounds) and Keyanna Warthen (10 points).
The Hooiser led 23-11 after one quarters, but the Stars trimmed their deficit to six points in the second quarter. With 5:16 left in the first half, Buss sank a 3-pointer to give Indiana a double-digit lead.
The Hooisers led 43-32 at halftime before using a 24-6 third-quarter run to take a 67-38 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
Ruth resuming golf career at McKendree
MOUNT CARMEL — Former Mount Carmel High School golfer Paul Ruth announced via Facebook this week that he transferring to McKendree University to resume his links career at the collegiate level.
Ruth attended Wabash Valley College as a freshman last year.
McKendree is an NCAA Division II university in Lebanon.
Ireland finishes atop Men's Club tournament
MOUNT CARMEL — Kevin Ireland claimed a one-stroke a victory over Matt Deisher and Jacob Zwilling during the Men's Club event Wednesday at Mount Carmel Municipal Golf Course.
Ireland turned in a 35 to lead the gross standings as Deisher and Zwilling tied for second with 36s. Mitchell Schoenheit and Rob Dean each occupied fourth place after carding 37s.
Al Henager and Clint Bolden recorded 31s to lead the net standings. Drew Thompson was third with a 33, while Dan Schonert and Chuck Wilkinson tied for fourth with 34s.
Henager, Gritton tie for Bingo Bango Bongo title
MOUNT CARMEL — Ruth Ann Henager and Marsha Gritton tied for first place at the Women's Club's Bingo Bango Bongo Tournament on Wednesday at Wednesday at Mount Carmel Municipal Golf Course.
Karen Schnarre finished third and Faye Rodgers claimed fourth.
