MOUNT CARMEL - Not much drama was had last week as the Mount Carmel Lady Jr. Aces defeated Fairfield Tuesday, 30-8, in girls Junior High basketball action.

“We came out a little flat,” said Mount Carmel coach Ron Patton. “We played more down a level. Even with the score what it was we probably had, easily, 20 to 30 turnovers. We didn’t take care of the ball. We’ve got to have more effort in practice.”

The Lady Jr. Aces held Fairfield to .08 percent shooting as the Colts hit three of its 36 shot attempts.

“We saw a lot of good things,” said Patton. “We do a good job at times of seeing what we can take advantage of but I think there’s a lot of times when we’re on the floor we’re thinking that the other team is just going to quit and we don’t give 100 percent and we need to get over that.”

Taylor Singer led Mount Carmel with 11 points. She also had five rebounds. Kenley Drone finished with 10 points and four rebounds, while Rilee Riggs had five points and eight boards.

They [Singer and Riggs] both do an outstanding job inside,” said Patton. “I think we both get a little lax at times. We do overforce some things at times and stand straight up on defense and get caught out of position, which higher level teams will make us pay for that. That’s where our focus is at right now. We’re trying to get them to understand that we’re not going to roll over everybody.”

Mount Carmel didn’t allow a field goal until 2:38 left until halftime, which made it 13-4. The Lady Jr. Aces went on a 13-2 run to close the game. Neither team scored after Fairfield’s final field goal with 3:14 left in the game.

“We did a better job tonight than what we have been doing with calling out some screens,” said Patton. “There are things that we’re getting better on. We just have to get a solid effort and get everyone to understand what it takes. We have the talent, height, and skill that we could make a lot of noise this year. Hopefully, they get that understanding and are hungry for it.”

The Jr. Lady Aces played South Knox Friday, but results were not made available as of press time. Mount Carmel plays at home Monday against Owensville.
