MOUNT CARMEL — In the midst of a youth movement, the Lady Aces golf team won the Mount Carmel Invitational on Thursday at Mount Carmel Municipal Golf Course.

Mount Carmel lost state-qualifier Mallory Raber to graduation last spring, and senior Baylee Ray decided not to return this season. But sophomores Allyson Armstrong, Faith Witsmore and Neveah Brock and freshman Maya Smith are back as the Lady Aces captured the title of their season opener.

By the margin of five strokes, Mount Carmel held off Hamilton County 403 to 408 to secure the title.

Lady Aces head coach Karin Kelsey said her young team was calm under pressure.

“I was very pleased that the girls came back with a win,” Kelsey said. “I have (one) freshman and (three) sophomores, and that’s hard to do, to come out and win a tournament like this on the very first day. I’m sure that will motivate the girls to do well the rest of the season.”

All four of the Mount Carmel golfers finished among the top ten individuals. Armstrong shot a 93 for a third-place finish and Smith had a 99 for fourth, while Witsman (105) and Brock (106) went back-to-back at seventh and eighth, respectively.

Medalist Kylee Vaughan carded an impressive 6-over 77 for the Lady Foxes, who also received a 93 from Lauren Ward. But the Lady Aces won the tournament as Witsman and Brock combined to defeat Gabrielle Russell (118) and Jaylee Glenn (120) by a 211 to 238 count.

Gabby Adams (101, fifth) of Harrisburg, Lily Redman (104, sixth) of Carmi-White County, Allie Gee (110, ninth) of Carmi-White County and Addison Seifert (110, tenth) of Fairfield also placed among the top ten individuals.

Scorecard playoffs were used to break ties.

Mount Carmel plays in the Oblong/Casey-Westfield Invitational at 4 p.m. Monday at Robinson.
