CHAMPAIGN - Five Mount Carmel wrestlers will compete for a Class A state championship starting Thursday when the Illinois High School Association presents its wrestling state finals bracket beginning Thursday at the State Farm Arena in Champaign.
It takes three victories to bring home a state championship. The Class 1A preliminaries will open on six mats starting at 1 p.m.
Then on Friday, the quarterfinals and first-round wrestlebacks will hit the mat at 8:30 a.m.
Also on Friday, the Class 1A, 2A and 3A championship semifinals will see action starting at 7 p.m.
The wrestlebacks semifinals open action Saturday morning at 9 a.m. then the semifinals of wrestlebacks will compete at 11 a.m.
At 1 o’clock the third, fourth, fifth and sixth-place matches will be decided.
After those matches are decided, the State Farm Arena will be cleared in preparation for what many will say is the best part of any state finals competition, the Grand March.
The final session starts at 4:30 p.m. with the lineup for the Grand March starting at 5 o’clock.
State championship matches are scheduled to start at 5:30 on three mats where all three classes will compete starting at 106 pounds.
Dayton Hall was the lone champion coming out of the Vandalia Sectional. Hall is 39-3 this season in his first season as a high school grappler.
Hall will wrestle in the 106-pound bracket and open against Conner Elmer of Dakota, who is 27-14 on the season.
Cade Keepes was second at 113 pounds at the sectional. Keepes - who is 35-4 this season - will take on Kasim Quinn (17-9) from Chicago (DePaul College Prep).
At 120 pounds, Chevvy Wood finished in second-place coming out of the Vandalia Sectional.
Wood will bring his 28-4 record to the State Farm Arena and open the first round against Gage Spencer, who is 33-4 on the season, from Heyworth.
Ryan Johnson also finished in second-place at the Vandalia Sectional. Johnson is 35-7 and will open his quest for a 170-pound state championship against senior Luke Shobe, who is 40-2 from Clinton.
The final Aces’ wrestler to compete at the state finals is junior Dalton Farrar. He will take a 34-8 record into his match against 43-1 Justin Coggins from Clifton (Central).
