MOUNT CARMEL – Oles, Suzanne (Schafer), age 67, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 9, 2018, after a long battle with lung cancer.

Suzanne was born to Elizabeth and Paul Gibbons in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was raised in Mt. Carmel, IL and attributes much of her success in life to the values she learned in that community. She enjoyed a 42 year career with IBM in a variety of sales, sales management and executive positions that took her across the US and later to a two-year residence in Paris, France.

She had many interests cooking for her family, travel, golf, bridge and was an avid reader. For the last 14 years her passion was lung cancer research, as well as counseling and being a phone buddy to others fighting cancer. She worked with many organizations fundraising for lung cancer research. She regarded Prelude to a Cure, an organization dedicated to finding the cure for lung cancer, the most promising as they put their funds to work immediately.

She is survived by her loving husband Walter J. Oles Jr. Three much loved step-children and granddaughter: Caroline (Travis Stone) Oles of Atlanta, GA, Walter J. (Nicole) Oles, III of Santee, CA, Christine (Alex) Steinwachs, sweet baby Charlotte Lenore Steinwachs of Pembroke Pines, FL and a number of cherished cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass will be at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, October 6 at 1:30 PM. There will be a celebration of Suzanne's life at the Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club on Sunday, October 7 from 11 AM to 3 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to St. Mark the Evangelist whose priests, staff and parishioners were of immense comfort during her journey.
