MOUNT CARMEL — Linda K. Oxby, 60, of Mount Carmel, passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017 at Oakview Heights Continuous Care and Rehab after battling cancer for six years.
She was born May 6, 1957 in Decatur, the daughter of Victor and Farreline (Hunley) Oxby of Blue Mound.
Linda was a graduate of Blue Mound High School. She graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in education. Following graduation, Linda taught at Coal City School for five years; this is where she found her love for coaching volleyball.
After leaving Coal City, she moved to Albion, where she was employed by the Edwards County School District in 1984. Linda served as the physical education instructor for much of her time as well as the dean of students and the athletic director. Linda coached the volleyball team for 19 years. She had a very successful coaching career, taking five teams to the state tournament.
During Linda’s last year of coaching, she placed second in state with a record of 41-1. Linda’s overall record during her 19 years of coaching was 633-180. On Aug. 28, 2012, the Edwards County school board renamed the school gym, Linda Oxby Gymnasium. Linda’s legacy will be left to the many students she taught, coached and inspired to be better on and off the court. She was a member of Parkview Christian Church in Mount Carmel. Linda will be missed by her family and all who knew her.
Linda will be remembered by her parents, Victor and Farreline Oxby; two brothers, Michael Oxby and wife, Marilyn of River Grove, and Roger Oxby and wife Susan of Springfield; nieces, Kristy Wenz, Katy Jahnke, Katie Oxby and Emily Pope; one great nephew and two great nieces; and special friends, Nixie Hnetkovsky and Gale Jewsbury.
The Oxby family would like to thank “Team Oxby,” Dr. Ahmed and his staff, Celtic Healthcare and nurse, Amanda Turner, along with the many friends of Blue Mound, Edwards County and Mount Carmel for their compassionate care during Linda’s battle with cancer.
Family and friends are invited to gather from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017 at the Linda Oxby Gymnasium at Edwards County High School.
Funeral service is at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 9, 2017 at Parkview Christian Church in Mount Carmel, with Pastor Mark Richison officiating. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. in Spurgeon Cemetery in Spurgeon, Indiana. All times are Central Standard Time.
