MOUNT CARMEL — A West Salem man is behind bars after police responded to a burglary in progress at 925 N. Market St. in Mount Carmel Monday.

Mount Carmel Police Department officers and K9-Ace arrived on scene and secured the outside of the building. Police were in the process of deploying the K-9, when a male subject busted through the front glass window of the building, causing it to break, a press release stated.

The suspect then reportedly came at one of the responding officers with a knife. The officer was able to shoot the suspect with his taser causing the suspect to fall to the ground.

The suspect was identified as Jerry L. Osmon, 41, of West Salem. Osmon was taken into custody and charged with criminal trespass to real property, criminal damage to property, resisting a peace officer, aggravated assault, burglary and possession of burglary tools.

Osmon is being held in the Wabash County Jail pending a bond hearing.
