MOUNT CARMEL — Mount Carmel Retail Merchants Committee hosts a solar eclipse party at the Uptown Amphitheater Monday, Aug. 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A cookout begins at 11 a.m., then Wabash Valley College Science Professor Rich Poskin presents a short lecture on eclipses at 11:15 a.m.
There will also be a free concert by Moneka Fullop from noon until 2 p.m. with a break at 1:23 p.m. for the actual viewing of the eclipse. There will be eclipse glasses for free to anyone who shows a receipt from any RMC member. FirstBank of Mount Carmel is also selling eclipse glasses for $2 with the proceeds benefiting local cancer patients.
Wabash County School District 348 has also announced that each school has purchased eclipse glasses for students who will be able to view the eclipse that day while at school.
Wabash County Health Department Director Judy Wissel said he has been in contact with the Wabash County Emergency Management Agency in preparation for an influx of people who may come into the county that day to view the eclipse. "We will be in the 98 percent eclusion for the eclipse, so we may have a large amount of people come into the area to view the eclipse. We just want to make sure we are prepared," said Wissel.
