MOUNT CARMEL — The city council heard the first reading Monday of a new ordinance that would increase parking violation fees from $6 to $25.

"It costs more to issue a ticket than what is recovered by the fine," said City Clerk Rudy Witsman.

The council also passed the first reading on a new ordinance that would allow package liquor stores to serve alcohol, so they can obtain gaming machines.

Also in Monday's meeting, Mayor Bill Hudson reported that the Mount Carmel swimming pool was closed for several days after a pump went out, but parts arrived Monday and the pool is reset to open Wednesday.

The Mount Carmel Police and Fire Departments reported members will team up and grill out at the July 8 car show at Wabash Valley College. All proceeds made during the car show will benefit the Shop with a Cop program.
