MOUNT CARMEL — After seven successful years in Mount Carmel, a local business is opening a second location in Princeton, Indiana.
Michelle Rodriguez announced the expansion of her business at the Wabash County Retail Merchants Committee meeting Tuesday.
Michelle, who co-owns Schoogies along with her parents Rod and Debbie Rodriguez, shared the store had a humorous beginning.
"My dad went behind my mom's back and bought a building," Michelle laughed.
The 8,000 square foot store, located at 723 N. Walnut St., carries a variety of new and used furniture, designer clothing, country candles and other items including E-cigarettes. When Michelle moved to town, she said she really wanted to start purchasing and revamping furniture.
"I wanted to get into the business of buying furniture," she said. "My dad had this big ole garage and wasn't doing anything with it so I went out there one day and it took me two days to clean it out. I bought my first piece of furniture for $60 and I flipped it."
Rod and Debbie used to own Snoopers and Scooters in Mount Carmel, so that's how the name Schoogies came about, Michelle continued.
Now, they have decided to open a second location at 130 W. State St. in Princeton, which will be opening Monday, June 19. The grand opening will be held July 7, Michelle said.
"I'm excited about the expansion," she said. "Hopefully it keeps me busy — I love working."
Jaleigh Lashbrook, owner of Hairport, was also a featured speaker at this month's RMC meeting.
She shared she has owned the full service salon for 23 years after purchasing it from Pat Lane. Hairport has been a business is the Mount Carmel area for over 50 years.
Now, Jaleigh operates out of her home at 1020 N. Walnut St. by appointment only. In addition to offering 64 shades of Goldwell hair color, Hairport now offers several other products, like Prüvit's Keto//OS and Pink Pewter Headbands.
"Keto OS was designed for NASA and Navy Seals," Jaleigh said. "It's actually not a weight loss product, but I've lost 18 pounds on it in two months."
She said Keto OS is supposed to give your body the nutrients it needs to keep it operating properly. The variety of drink mixes are said to increase energy for 6 to 10 hours.
In other business, merchants discussed the new trash cans that were purchased with Duck Race money. The trash cans are currently being assembled by various RMC members and the city street department, and will be installed as soon as they are finished.
